Early in the season, it looked like the Caps would once again dominate the Eastern Conference and rally to the first overall seed without any problems. However, the team around All-Star Alex Ovechkin slowed down considerably and fell to the fifth place, posting a 28-15-10 record. Highly motivated to get back to the top of the league, the Washington Capitals will host Dany Heatley and the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday at midnight GMT.

Similarly, things have not been going particularly well for the Sharks either. In fact, Joe Thornton and company ranked just tenth in the West a few weeks ago before making a run to get back to the playoff race. Surprisingly, San Jose had a fairly tough time executing at the offensive end of the ice, even though the Californian franchise can count on the individual talent of Patrick Marleau, Dany Heatley and Joe Thornton. Nonetheless, the Sharks can be expected to give the Caps a run for their money when the game gets underway on Wednesday night.

Arguably the best offensive team in the Western Conference, the San Jose Sharks recovered from a slow start into the season and secured two straight wins versus the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild. The Capitals on the other hand opened the season with back-to-back wins but hit a slump last week as they dropped three straight. Thus, Washington is under pressure to perform well in their home game versus the San Jose Sharks on Thursday at 11 p.m. GMT.

As exciting as the Capitals’ offense has been thus far, the team around All-Star Alexander Ovechkin has undeniably shown significant defensive shortcomings. More specifically, the Caps allowed 13 goals in their last three games as they fell to the Red Wings, Rangers and Flyers. That said, all of these match-ups were highly contested and decided by only one goal, yet Washington failed to perform under pressure in the last minutes of regulation. So far, Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom lead the Capitals’ scoring sheet with an impressive 10 points each.

In contrast, San Jose came slow out of the gates but is getting more comfortable with their new lineup as the season goes on. As of late, Dany Heatley has been nearly unstoppable as he already recorded five goals and five assists in five appearances for San Jose. Holding on to a 3-2-0 record, Dany Heatley and the Sharks are facing similar issues as the Capitals. While San Jose has as much offensive firing power as anyone in the league, the defense appears to be struggling at the times. Therefore, the audience can expect a very entertaining match between the Sharks and Caps with a lot of action in front of both nets.
