Even though the Rangers made various trades over the last two years, the franchise from New York is still struggling to establish itself in the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference. After missing the playoffs in 2009-10, Marian Gaborik and company are now holding on to a 16-12-1 record and the eight place in the East after two months of regular season play. Once again, the Rangers’ mediocre offensive performance prevented the team to get off to a better start, as New York is averaging just 2.7 goals per game. Thus, the New York Rangers will do their best to clinch their 17^th win of the season when Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals are in town on Monday at midnight GMT.

In contrast, the Caps experienced no problems at the offensive end of the ice, in fact, the team around Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom has been the fourth best offensive team up to this point. Likewise Washington did a reasonably decent job at shutting down its opponents which helped them to climb to the first place of the Southeast Division. Therefore, the Rangers could have a hard time avoiding a loss at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.

Without any doubts, the Rangers' front-office is expecting the team around Marian Gaborik to make it back to the post-season in 2010-11 after missing the playoffs last year. So far, New York has been playing fairly well and posted a 7-5-1 record despite some rather sloppy defense at times. Thus, the New York Rangers will host Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on Wednesday at 0:30 a.m. GMT.

After starting this year's NHL campaign with some ups and downs, the Capitals have evidently found their rhythm as they steamrolled the Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs to win three straight last week. Especially at home the Caps have been nearly invincible and won six out of seven games in the first month of action. Leading all scores is Alex Ovechkin who scored 7 goals and 15 points in the first 12 regular season games. Therefore, it looks like the Rangers will have to bring their A-game to avoid a home loss versus Washington on Wednesday night. Especially New York's defensive lines will have to play with a lot of energy to slow down the Capitals' high-octane offense.

Feeding off their exceptional offense, the Washington Capitals are currently tied for the first place in the Eastern Conference and look like they might be a legitimate title contender down the stretch. Thus, the Caps will face the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday at midnight GMT.

Although Washington did not get off to a great start, the franchise from D.C. was able to climb back to the top of the Eastern Conference with a spectacular performance in the last three weeks. More specifically, the Caps won seven of their last ten games as they entirely relied on their nearly unstoppable offense to clinch said victories. In fact, the Capitals lead the NHL with 70 goals in 18 games which helped them to compensate for allowing no less than 3.1 goals per contest. Especially All-Star Alexander Ovechkin has been spectacular as the Russian left wing scored 14 goals and added 9 assists for a total of 23 points in just 14 games. Likewise, Nicklas Backstrom and Brooks Laich had no trouble finding the net, putting up 22 and 18 points respectively.

The New York Rangers on the other hand were surprisingly dominant in the first weeks of play, but slowed down significantly over the past month. Albeit the Rangers are still holding on to a respectable sixth place in the Eastern Conference, coach John Tortorella’s squad lost eight of their last eleven and is desperately trying to get back on track. Most importantly, New York’s defense seemed to deteriorate as the season went on and is an issue that urgently needs to be addressed. Even though Vaclav Prospal and Marian Gaborik combined for 44 points already, the Rangers had their fair share of problems at the other end of the ice lately. Taking everything into account, the Capitals will be entering their encounter with Marian Gaborik and company as everyone’s favorite to clinch a win at Madison Square Garden. Even though the Rangers are capable of giving the Caps a run for their money, they have not shown the needed consistency recently and will most likely have to elevate their game in order to avoid another loss on Wednesday night.
