Given the fact that the Devils were coming off a phenomenal regular season in 2008-09, very few expected the team around Zach Parise to come slow out of the gates this year. Thus, Jacques Lemaire’s team is highly motivated to fight back when they will meet the Washington Capitals at Verizon Center on Monday at 11 p.m. GMT.

While the New Jersey Devils dropped two straight games versus the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers, the way the games went down was even more humiliating than the loss itself. More specifically, New Jersey lacked any consistent offensive threat and only scored two goals in each game. Similarly, their defense has been mediocre at best and Martin Brodeur’s goaltending left much to be desired.
In contrast, the Capitals got off a good start as they secured back-to-back wins versus the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs before falling to the undefeated Philadelphia Flyers in overtime. So far, their offensive has been spectacular as they managed to score 16 goals in the first three games. Especially All-Star forward Alexander Ovechkin underlined being among the best in the league by scoring five goals and adding four assists. Likewise, Swedish center Nicklas Backstrom already dished out eight assists in his third year in the NHL. Although one might be tempted to say the New Jersey Devils are overdue for playing up to their potential, the Washington Capitals will be a tough hurdle to overcome. Unless the Devils find a way to contain the Caps’ dynamic offense they might find themselves having a tough night on the road.
