Considering that the Caps turned out to be by far the most dominant team in the entire league during the regular season, losing their home opener in 2009-10 playoffs was certainly a surprise. Thus, Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals will be looking to get back on track when they take on the Montreal Canadiens on Monday at 11 p.m. GMT.

Entering the post-season as number one overall seed with a terrific 54-15-13 record, there is no doubt that the Capitals are one of the favorites to win it all in this year’s NHL campaign. Yet, Washington did not get off to a good start as they lost their home opener versus the Canadiens on Wednesday. That said, it should be mentioned that the Caps had plenty of opportunities to avoid the eventual 3-2 overtime loss as they put a lot of pressure on Montreal’s goal throughout the game. However, franchise cornerstone Alex Ovechkin did not record a single shot on the net, even though the Capitals accumulated a total of no less than 47 shots.
In contrast, the Canadiens are very excited to stay in the series and possibly give the Caps a run for their money in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Most importantly, the Habs’ defense did an excellent job of containing Alex Ovechkin and showed the ability to perform under pressure. With the series shifting back to Montreal, Tomas Plekanec and company will have the opportunity to build on their lead in front of their home-crowd. Nonetheless, one has to keep in mind that the Capitals are obviously the superior overall team and will make life difficult for Montreal down the stretch. Either way, the audience can expect an entertaining hockey game when the underdogs from Quebec take on the Washington Capitals on Monday night.
