After a sloppy season start that culminated in two losses versus the St Louis Blues, the Detroit Red Wings are hoping to clinch their first win of the season at home versus Washington. On Saturday at 11 p.m. GMT, the undefeated Capitals will be in Detroit to face the Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.

As successful as the Caps have been in the first week of action, they also showed some weaknesses in their two consecutive wins. Most importantly, their defense seemed to lack consistent organization and awareness of the opponent. In their 6-4 win versus Toronto the team from D.C. was already up 6-1 but came alarmingly close to giving the game away. One bright spot thus far has been the leadership of Alexander Ovechkin who leads the NHL with 3 goals and 3 assists for a total of 6 points in just two games.

The Red Wings on the other hand came slow out of the gates and experienced two rather humiliating losses during the NHL Europe event. Arguably the best team in the Western Conference, the squad around veteran defender Nicklas Lidstrom lost twice to the rebuilding St Louis Blues. However, the aforementioned circumstances do not necessarily translate into a win for the Caps. In fact, the Red Wings have very capable defensive lines that should at least prevent Washington’s offense from continuing to score at their current rate of five goals per game. Likewise, said defensive shortcomings of the Capitals could be crucial versus a team packed with veterans who are well prepared to take advantage of any turnovers.
