Washington Capitals v Boston Bruins Live

Halfway through the season, the Caps’ offense around All-Star Alex Ovechkin continues to steamroll their opponents and could very well lead to the number one overall seed for the franchise from D.C. down the stretch. Hoping to clinch another win on the road, the Washington Capitals will take on Marc Savard and the Boston Bruins at TD Banknorth Garden on Wednesday at midnight GMT.

Unlike the Capitals, the Bruins did not even remotely live up to their own expectations in the first four months of play. More specifically, Boston is just 11^th in the Eastern Conference and won only two of their last ten games. Considering that the Bruins finished last year’s NHL campaign with the best record in the East, there is no doubt that the performance of coach Claude Julien’s squad has been nothing else than disappointing so far. That said, Boston trails the sixth placed Atlanta Trashers by just two points and has plenty of time to make a run to the post-season, provided Marco Sturm and company get their act together.

In contrast, there is very little to criticize about the way Washington has played thus far. Leading the Eastern Conference with an outstanding 35-12-6 record, the Caps did not only win a lot of games but also played exciting up-tempo hockey night in and night out. Being the best offensive team in the league by a large margin, Washington managed to average nearly 4 goals per contest. Albeit some might point out that the Capitals’ defense is not quite as efficient as other contenders, it had no major impact on the Caps’ performance up to this point. Once again leading Washington’s scoring sheet, All-Star Alex Ovechkin has been on fire as he recorded no less than 34 goals and 73 points in just 45 games. Taking everything into consideration, the Caps will evidently enter their encounter with Boston as everyone’s favorites to come away with a win. Although the Bruins may have underachieved thus far, it appears to be questionable whether they could possibly give the Capitals a run for their money, even if they play up to their potential.
