Even though the Maple Leafs have not been playing quite as badly as in 2009-10, the franchise from Ontario is still trailing the eight seeded Atlanta Trashers by no less than ten points. One crucial issue has been Toronto’s inability to score goals on a consistent basis and prevented the team around veteran Phil Kessel from establishing itself in the playoff race. Thus, the Toronto Maple Leafs will try to get a win on the road when they visit Marian Gaborik and the New York Rangers on Thursday at midnight GMT.

In contrast, things have been going very well for the Rangers as they are holding on to a 26-18-3 record and are right at the top of the Atlantic Division. Feeding off their excellent defense, New York has played highly efficient up to this point and could very well secure home-ice advantage down the stretch. Therefore, Marian Gaborik and company can certainly be considered favorites to secure a victory at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.

Only being defeated by the Stanley Cup champions from Pittsburg so far, the New York Rangers are very content with their start into the 2009-10 season. Hoping to hold on to their momentum when the Maple Leafs will be in town, the Rangers will host Toronto on Monday at 11 p.m. GMT.

Unlike other teams who underwent significant changes during the off-season, New York’s moves already paid dividends for the franchise. More specifically, high-scoring forward Marian Gaborik lived up to all expectations as he led the Rangers to beat the Ottawa Senators and New Jersey Devils with two goals and four points. Likewise, rookie Matt Gilroy and Michael del Zotto immediately made an impact as they did not only provide a physical presence on the defensive end of the ice but also combined for two goals and two assists in the first week of play.

In contrast, there is very little excitement in Ontario about the Toronto Maple Leafs’ performance in 2009-10 so far. Dropping three consecutive games versus the Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals and Ottawa Senators, Ron Wilson’s team is still waiting for its first victory of the season. While the aforementioned three games equally revealed shortcomings on both ends of the ice, the Leafs are under significant pressure to get their act together as the undisputed goal of this year’s NHL campaign is a playoff berth. However, Toronto has a tough challenge ahead of them as the Rangers’ seem to have found their rhythm and successfully integrated their newly acquired pieces into a well functioning unit. Ultimately, the Maple Leafs will need an excellent night from their forwards as New York has proven to be one of the best defensive teams in the league. Toronto on the other hand allowed more goals than any other team in 2008-09 and has failed to show any improvements so far.
