Without any doubts, very few expected the Colorado Avalanche to open the season with back-to-back wins after a rather poor performance throughout 2008-09. However, Joe Sacco’s overhauled squad was able to prove their critics wrong and is holding on to a 2-1-0 record in the tough Western Conference. On Tuesday at 11:30 p.m. GMT, the team around Milan Hejduk will head to Toronto to face the struggling Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre.

Unlike the Avalanche, the Maple Leafs were not able to live up to the high expectations of their fanbase. More specifically, the team around Tomas Kaberle and Matt Stajan is still waiting for its first win in 2009-10 after suffering three consecutive defeats in the first week of action. Although franchise cornerstones Kaberle and Stajan performed fairly well with 3 goals and 3 assists respectively, coach Ron Wilson’s squad has not found its rhythm defensively yet. In fact, the struggling defense of the Leafs already allowed 12 goals in just three games.

Thus, the Avalanche could very well be capable of taking advantage of Toronto’s slump provided they continue to keep up the level of play they have shown so far. Especially veteran right wing Milan Hejduk and the 23-year old Polish forward Wojtek Wolski have provided excellent offense as they recorded four points each. Considering that neither team has been known for its consistency in the recent past, both teams could find themselves on a level playing field in this match-up, provided the Leafs finally play up to their potential.
