Friday 18th March 03:30 - 06:30 GMT
When the 2009-10 schedule was published in August, very few expected the St Louis Blues to win both games of their NHL Europe encounter with the Detroit Red Wings in Helsinki. However, veteran forward Paul Kariya carried the Blues to back-to-back wins versus the defending Western Conference champions from Michigan with two goals and two assists. Back on American soil, St Louis will host the unpredictable Los Angeles Kings at Scottrade Center on Sunday at midnight GMT.

In contrast, the Los Angeles Kings started the season as they finished the last one – unorganized defensive turmoil combined with mediocre individual talent. While Los Angeles opened the season with a disappointing 6-3 loss versus the Coyotes, they managed to bounce back in San Jose and clinched a 6-4 win. Ultimately, the Kings will have to significantly improve their defense if they want to avoid missing the post-season for the seventh straight year. However, L.A. will at least be able to count on their regular goaltender Jon Quick who will be back in the lineup after a minor injury.
Considering the poor state of the Los Angeles Kings a lot of optimism is necessary to see them making it past the St Louis Blues. Even though the Kings beat the Sharks, it should be noted that they blew a 4-0 lead before scoring the deciding two goals in the third period. Most importantly, the Blues have proven to play hard on both ends of the ice and are unlikely to feed the Kings with a boatload of turnovers. Likewise, former All-Stars Keith Tkachuk and Paul Kariya can be expected to benefit from L.A.’s lack of defense and could turn out to be the deciding factors to swing the game in St Louis favor.
