Having won five of their last seven games, the Kings certainly made a nice run to get back into the playoff race. However, L.A. will have to continue to keep up its solid level of play when they host Dany Heatley and the San Jose Sharks at Staples Center on Friday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

Albeit the Sharks struggled at times this year, the veteran team around Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton pulled its act together in time as they are hanging on to a 42-23-8 record and the third place in the Western Conference with a few weeks of regular season play remaining. One positive aspect has been San Jose’s relatively decent defense which could become a decisive factor come playoff time. That said, more efficiency at the offensive end would still be desirable for Dany Heatley and company. Either way, the Sharks will enter their encounter with the Kings as favorites to clinch another victory on Friday night.

While the Sharks have not been as dominant as anticipated early in the season, Patrick Marleau and company remain one of the better teams in the league and can be expected to compete for home-ice advantage down the stretch. Thus, Dany Heatley and the San Jose Sharks will try to get their fifth home win of the season when they host the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

Even though the Kings are coming off a post-season appearance last year, very few thought that the team around Anze Kopitar would be leading the Western Conference after six weeks of regular season action in 2010-11. However, Los Angeles showcased exciting up-tempo hockey and managed to win 11 out of 14 games to start the season, including a perfect 7-0-0 record at home. Similarly, the Kings are among the best defensive teams in the league, holding their opponents to just 1.9 goals per contest. Therefore, it looks like the Sharks will have to play much better hockey than in recent weeks to avoid a home loss versus the Kings on Tuesday night.

Considering that the Kings have constantly been missing the playoffs for the past decade, it was certainly a pleasant surprise to see the team around Anze Kopitar getting off to a good season start for once. Thus, the Kings will make their way to San Jose to take on the Sharks’ dynamic offense around Dany Heatley on Thursday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

Much like the Kings, San Jose has no complaints about the way they performed thus far either. Posting a 19-6-4 record in the opening two months of play, Joe Thornton and company established themselves at the top of the Western Conference, five points ahead of the Blackhawks. Most importantly, the acquisition of All-Star Dany Heatley already paid dividends as he contributed 18 goals in 14 assists. Similarly, Joe Thornton was a large part of San Jose’s offense and recorded no less than 32 assists in 29 games thus far. At the other end of the ice the Sharks did not perform bad either, led by goalie Evgeni Nabokov who allowed only 2.35 goals per contest and posted a .921 save percentage.
Less expected than the Sharks’ success was the Kings performance in the first two months of action. Holding on to a 16-10-2 record and a fifth place in the Western Conference, Anze Kopitar and company performed fairly well and might be able to stay in the playoff race down the stretch. Heading to their encounter with the Sharks, the Kings might have to play without Ryan Smyth once again as he is expected to be a game-time decision after missing the past two weeks with a lower body injury. Thus, Anze Kopitar might have to carry the Kings’ offense even more, so far the Slovenian center scored 14 goals and 33 points in 29 games. Considering that the Kings did not excel defensively, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to withstand the Sharks’ explosive offense. Either way, fans around the league can expect an entertaining hockey game when two of the better teams in the league face each other on Thursday.

Albeit Dany Heatley and the San Jose Sharks got off to a rather mediocre start, they seem to have found their rhythm as they won two straight last week. Thus, they are confidently awaiting the Los Angeles Kings who will be in town for their road game versus the Sharks on Thursday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

Given the fact that the Kings have been struggling for nearly a decade, many were surprised by the impressive start the team from California managed to pull off. Holding on to an 8-4-0 record, Los Angeles is just two points away from the Colorado Avalanche who lead the Western Conference. Even though the Kings are the worst defensive team in the league at 38 goals allowed, they were able to compensate said problem with spectacular performances at the other end of the ice. Especially Anze Kopitar and Ryan Smyth have been on fire as they scored 21 and 15 points respectively.
Much like the Kings, the Sharks had no trouble finding the net either but seemed a bit lost defensively on many occasions. More specifically, goalie Evgeni Nabokov and San Jose’s defensive lines allowed nearly 3 goals per game so far and are still trying to address the issue. That said, it is no surprise that their high-scoring offense has performed as good as anyone in the league. Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley combined for 47 points in just 12 games. Given the fact that both teams focus on their offensive up-tempo hockey, fans around the league will most likely get to see a highly entertaining game on Thursday night. Yet, who comes away with a win remains to be seen. Under normal circumstances one would give the Sharks an edge over the Kings, but considering how well the Kings played thus far it is not beyond the realms of reality that Los Angeles could steal one on the road.
