Without any doubts, the Red Wings demonstrated that they are ready to contend for another title when they swept the Phoenix Coyotes 4-0 in the first playoff round while averaging no less than 4.5 goals per contest. However, Detroit dropped its first two games versus the Sharks in the Western Conference Semifinals and is now under a lot of pressure to elevate its level of play in order to climb back into the series. Albeit the Kings forced the Sharks into a contested six game series to start the playoffs, Joe Thornton and company managed to advance to the second round down the stretch. Trailing the leading Canucks by just five points, the Red Wings are still in the race for the number one overall seed. Holding on to a five game winning streak, Nicklas Lidstrom and the Detroit Red Wings are hoping to get an important win when they play the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday at 0:30 a.m. GMT.

Earlier this year, it looked like the Sharks might have trouble to even stay in the playoff mix, let alone competing for a Stanley Cup title. However, the franchise from the Bay Area got its act together as they won eight of their last ten games and rallied to the fourth place in the Western Conference. Ironically, it was not the Sharks’ offense around All-Star Dany Heatley, Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton, but a solid defensive effort night in and night out that helped the team to get back on track. Therefore, hockey fans around the globe can expect an entertaining game between two of the best teams in the West on Wednesday night.

Albeit the Sharks were not as dominant as expected in the first post-season round, the team around Dany Heatley still managed to overcome the Colorado Avalanche and advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals. Thus, the San Jose Sharks will take on Nicklas Lidstrom and the Detroit Red Wings in game three on Tuesday at 11:30 p.m. GMT.

Likewise, the Wings had a fairly tough time in round one versus the Phoenix Coyotes as the franchise from Arizona took them all the way to a game seven showdown. Nonetheless, Detroit was able to close out the series with an impressive 6-1 blowout win on the road. However, the pressure on Pavel Datsyuk and company is rising after losing the series opener 4-3 in San Jose. That said, the Red Wings have shown in the past that their veteran squad is capable of bouncing back in tough situations and can be expected to give the Sharks a run for their money.

San Jose on the other hand is hoping to finally make some noise in the post-season after a rather unsatisfying first round exit last year. Being the number one seed in the Western Conference, the Sharks will enjoy home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs and could very well get a lift from their home crowd down the stretch. Most importantly, the franchise from California is counting on their dynamic offense around Patrick Marleau, Dany Heatley and Joe Thornton to put pressure on the Wings' defensive lines throughout the series. Moreover, center Joe Pavelski has been phenomenal so far and recorded 7 goals and 4 assists for a total of 11 points in just 7 games. Taking everything into account, it looks like the Sharks might have a slight advantage over the Wings, but will most likely have to play up to their potential at both ends of the ice to avoid a road loss in Detroit on Tuesday night.
