While there is no doubt that the Bruins have been underperforming in recent years, their performance in this year’s NHL campaign has been excellent nonetheless. Third in the East halfway through the season, Boston has put itself in a great position to compete for home-ice advantage down the stretch. Looking for their 29th win in 2010-11, the Boston Bruins will host Patrick Marleau and the San Jose Sharks on Saturday at 6 p.m. GMT.
In contrast, the Sharks failed to live up to their contender role thus far and are struggling to hold on to the eight place in the Western Conference. Most surprisingly, San Jose’s offense has been mediocre all season long despite All-Star caliber players such as Dany Heatley, Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton. Likewise, the Sharks’ defensive efforts and penalty killing have also been less than stellar and will have to improve dramatically if the franchise from California wants to avoid another early playoff exit.
