After winning the Stanley Cup in June, the Pittsburgh Penguins are getting ready to make another run at the title in this year’s NHL campaign. In the first home game of the new season, Evgeni Malkin and Sydney Crosby will take on the struggling Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday at 11:30 p.m. GMT.

Being at the bottom of the league in 2008-09, the Coyotes underwent some roster changes during the off-season. Most importantly, the franchise focused on improving through the NHL entry draft as well as signing veteran defender Adrian Aucoin. However, the team from Arizona was fairly limited in making any other moves due to their disastrous financial situation. More specifically, the team will most likely change ownership during this year’s NHL campaign and might also be relocated to Hamilton, Ontario, in 2010-2011. While Phoenix might still have improved a bit over the summer, it remains to be seen whether the unpleasant discussions off the ice will have a negative impact on the team.

Unfortunately, despite the aforementioned additions it is highly unlikely that the Coyotes will be able to keep up with the high-scoring Penguins. In fact, it appears to be a safe bet that Phoenix will be overwhelmed by Pittsburgh’s extraordinary offensive power. Last year, the Penguins dynamic scoring duo Evgeni Malkin and Sydney Crosby combined for 68 goals and 216 points during the regular season. Thus, the Coyotes will have to pray for a miracle to avoid being steamrolled by the Penguins.
