Although some might have thought that the Flyers’ Stanley Cup Finals appearance was a fluke last year, Philadelphia demonstrated that they are a legitimate contender as the team posted the second best record in the East up to this point. Thus, the Philadelphia Flyers will try to get an important win when they host Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday at midnight GMT.

While the Penguins’ start into the 2010-11 season was not all that exciting, the team around Sidney Crosby has been on fire as of late as they managed to win eleven in a row over the past month. Hanging on to an excellent 20-8-2 record, Pittsburgh even got past the high-scoring Washington Capitals to claim the first place in the Eastern Conference. Unlike in recent years, the Penguins did not only perform well offensively, but are also among the best defensive teams in the NHL, holding their opponents to just 2.3 goals per game. Likewise, All-Star Sidney Crosby could very well be on his way to another scoring title as the 23-year old center scored 26 goals and 50 points in just 30 appearances. Considering the way Pittsburgh has dominated the league over the past weeks, Evgeni Malkin and company will be the undisputed favorites heading into their matchup with the Flyers on Wednesday night.

Without any doubts, the Flyers' front-office is very pleased with the performance of coach Peter Laviolette's squad in the first week of action. More precisely, Philly posted a 2-0-1 record and has been playing great hockey at both ends of the ice. Thus, the Philadelphia Flyers will host Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins at Wachovia Center on Saturday at 11 p.m. GMT.

Given the fact that the Penguins made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and won it it all in 2009, Sidney Crosby and company certainly are under a lot of pressure to perform well in this year's NHL campaign. Yet, so far things did not go as planned as Pittsburgh lost three out of four in the first week of play. Even though all losses were highly contested games, the Penguins do find themselves at the bottom of the Atlantic division nonetheless. Therefore, Pittsburgh's offense around Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin will try to lead the team to a road win over the Flyers on Saturday night.

Winning just two of their last ten games, the Flyers have been struggling as of late and are desperately trying to get their act together. Unfortunately, Philadelphia is about to face another excellent team when the Penguins will be in town on Friday at midnight GMT.

Still trying to finish the regular season as number one seed in the Eastern Conference, the Penguins are hoping to hold on to the moment they built with back-to-back wins last week. So far, Pittsburgh relied to a large extent on their explosive offense to win games but also had their moments at the other end of the ice. Scoring 3.2 goals per contest, the Penguins offensive lines have been nearly unstoppable in the first ten weeks of play, led by All-Star forward Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Combining for 69 points in 32 and 26 games respectively, Pittsburgh appears to rise and fall with the performance of their two superstars.
The Philadelphia Flyers on the other hand slowly made their way to the bottom of the league despite a fairly good season start. Holding on to a 14-15-1 record, only the Carolina Hurricanes have less points than the Flyers so far. Albeit Philadelphia has not been particularly bad at either end of the ice, the team around Mike Richards failed to close out games down the stretch. Offensively, Richards and Jeff Carter put up 25 points each to lead Philly’s scoring sheet. Considering both teams’ situation, it looks like the Penguins are everyone’s favorites when they take on Philadelphia on Friday. Yet, Crosby and company should not underestimate the Flyers as they might be overdue to play up to their potential after some tough weeks.

Unlike other contenders, the Pittsburgh Penguins have been able to show in their first two games why they are expected to be a dominant force in 2009-10. Similarly, Jeff Carter and the Flyers played extremely well thus far and managed to beat the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils. On Thursday at 11 p.m. GMT, Sydney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin will be in Pennsylvania to face the Flyers at Wachovia Center.

Without any doubts, the Penguins proved their critics wrong when they beat the Detroit Red Wings in an exciting seven game series to win the NHL Stanley Cup in June. While some might have thought that the franchise overachieved in 2008, there is no question about the team anymore after two straight Finals appearances. Continuing where they left off versus the Red Wings, the team around the dynamic scoring duo of Crosby and Malkin managed to start the season with two clutch victories versus the New York Islanders and New York Rangers.

Philadelphia on the other hand has yet to make a leap to the top of the Eastern Conference, but showed promising signs in the preseason followed by two convincing victories to start the regular season. So far, the acquisition of veteran defender Chris Pronger turned out to be an excellent move as the Flyers’ defense appears to be better organized than in 2008-09. Whether Philly will be able to shock the favorites from Pittsburgh remains to be seen since stopping the Penguins’ offense is easier said than done. Either way, fans around the league can expect a close game between two teams hoping to establish themselves at the top of the Eastern Conference.
