Albeit the Penguins were not as dominant in this year’s NHL campaign as they were hoping to be, the team around Evgeni Malkin still managed to secure home-ice advantage with a fourth place finish in the Eastern Conference. Thus, Sydney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins will make their way to Ontario to face the Ottawa Senators in game three of the first playoff round on Tuesday at 11 p.m. GMT.

Even though Pittsburgh is the undisputed favorite to make it to the Conference semi-finals, Sydney Crosby and company did not get off to a good start as they dropped their first post-season game versus the Senators at home on Thursday night. Even though the Penguins rallied back from a 3-1 deficit, they ended up losing said game 5-4 down the stretch. Where as Malkin and Crosby combined for 2 goals and 5 points, Pittsburgh’s defense once again left much to be desired.Obviously, the Senators are thrilled to lead the series 1-0 but will have to be well aware of the fact that the Penguins are still the superior overall team. In other words, even though the home-ice advantage has now shifted in favor of Ottawa, the team around Daniel Alfredsson will have to bring its A-Game every night to possibly knock out the defending Stanley Cup champions from Pennsylvania. Where as the Senators managed to outscore the Pens in game one, they will most likely have to find a way to contain Evgeni Malkin and Sydney Crosby in the upcoming games to avoid being steamrolled by Pittsburgh’s offense. After all, Ottawa is very capable of putting on an offensive show once in a while, but it is not realistic to expect Alexei Kovalev and company to find the net five times on a daily basis.

Although the Penguins experienced their first defeat in 2009-10 versus the Coyotes, they are looking forward to performing better in their next game versus the Senators in Ontario. Holding on to a 2-1 record, All-Stars Malkin and Crosby will be in Ottawa when the game between the Senators and Penguins gets underway on Monday at 11:30 p.m. GMT.

Coming off two consecutive wins to start the season, the defending Stanley Cup champions surprisingly fell to the struggling Coyotes at home. However, their loss should not be overestimated as it was merely the result of an off-night of their go-to guys. Nonetheless, it raises the question whether Pittsburgh really should commit such a large amount of money to their key players while lacking a strong support cast due to financial constraints. In fact, nearly half of the franchise’s payroll is tied up in the salaries of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, center Sidney Crosby and forward Evgeni Malkin. In contrast, the Senators stumbled out of the gates as they suffered a 5-2 loss versus the New York Rangers in their season opener, but recovered with a 2-1 victory versus the Toronto Maple Leafs three days later. Spending most of the following two months at home, the Senators are hoping to establish themselves in the playoff mix early in the season. So far, captain Daniel Alfredsson has been an essential part of Ottawa’s offense and already scored two goals in the first week of action. However, it remains to be seen whether the Senators will be able to contain Pittsburgh’s offense on Monday night. Ultimately, the game might come down town to shutting down the Penguins’ dynamic duo Malkin and Crosby who are a tough obstacle to face for any team in the league.
