Taking into consideration that New Jersey entered the post-season as second seed in the Eastern Conference last year, their first round exit versus the Philadelphia Flyers was certainly very disappointing. As far as off-season changes are concerned, the Devils' biggest move was replacing defenceman Paul Martin by Anton Volchenkov who signed a six year deal worth almost $26 million. Thus, the defensive minded New Jersey Devils will try to secure a victory versus Sydney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday at 8 p.m. GMT.

Similarly, the Penguins are not completely satisfied with their performance in 2009-10 either as the franchise from Pennsylvania ended up losing to the eight seeded Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. That said, All-Star forward Evgeni Malkin missed more than a month of action due to injuries which in turn slowed down Pittsburgh's offense around Sidney Crosby. Likewise, the Penguins recently acquired defender Paul Martin from the Devils while they lost Sergei Gonchar who signed a three year contract in Ottawa this summer. Taking the aforementioned circumstances into consideration, fans around the world can expect an interesting hocking game when Sidney Crosby and company face one of the better defensive teams in the league on Monday.

Coming off a huge 8-2 blowout win versus the Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh underlined its ambitions to defend the Stanley Cup title in this year’s NHL campaign. Thus, Sidney Crosby and the Penguins will make their way to Newark to face the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Thursday at midnight GMT.

Despite a rather slow start into the 2009-10 season, the Devils wasted no time to pull their act together and find themselves at the top of the Eastern Conference after nearly three months of play. So far, New Jersey’s key to success evidently has been their efficient defense schemes as they held opposing teams to just 2.1 goals per contest. On the other hand, Jamie Langenbrunner and company were not quite as explosive as other top teams on the offensive end of the ice, yet the Devils were able to close out games when necessary. Especially franchise centerpiece Zach Parise was a big part of New Jersey’s upswing as he recorded 15 goals and 40 points in 35 appearances.
Much like the Devils, the Penguins played up to their potential so far and are hoping to enter the post-season with the top seed in the competitive Eastern Conference. Posting a 26-11-1 record, it looks like Pittsburgh’s Stanley Cup title in 2008-09 was no fluke and the team around Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin is indeed a legitimate contender. Even though the Penguins did not perform particularly well at the defensive end, their offensive lines’ scoring was very impressive. In 37 games, All-Star Sidney Crosby scored 22 goals and 46 points and appears to be on his way to yet another season beyond the 100-point mark. Thus, it looks like the Devils and Penguins could be on a level playing field when the game gets underway on Thursday. One crucial factor will be whether New Jersey can contain Malkin and Crosby since the Penguins’ dynamic offense evolves around said players. Either way, fans around the league can expect an exciting hockey night when two of the best teams in the East meet at Prudentical Center.
