Albeit very few expected the Coyotes to do well in this year’s NHL campaign, the team around Shane Doan managed to stay in the playoff mix and might make some noise down the stretch. Thus, the Phoenix Coyotes will travel to San Jose to take on the Sharks at HP Pavilion on Tuesday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

Without any doubts, the Sharks looked like one of the strongest teams in the league so far and are highly motivated to avoid another season of underachieving. Leading the Western Conference with a 22-8-7 record, San Jose’s high-octane offense outscored its opponents more often than not and has caused a wide range of problems for their opponents. That said, whether the Sharks’ success in the regular season will translate into a successful post-season run is an entirely different question. In fact, the team around Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau dominated the Western Conference in 2008-09 as well, but subsequently experienced a disappointing first round playoff exit. Therefore, it remains to be seen if Dany Heatley and company will live up to their own expectations and finally become a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.
In contrast, hardly anyone thought that the struggling franchise from Arizona could possibly compete for home ice advantage in the 2009-10 season. However, despite rumors of the team being bankrupt and for sale, Shane Doan and the Coyotes performed well on the ice and rallied to the fourth place in the Western Conference. Most importantly, coach Dave Tippett’s squad played excellent defense and held their opponents to just 2.2 goals per contest. Although Phoenix might lack an All-Star forward, they compensated said shortcoming by distributing the workload among many shoulders and featured four nearly equally talented offensive lines. Taking everything into consideration, fans around the league can expect an entertaining hockey game when two of the best teams in the Western Conference meet on Tuesday. While the Sharks might have more offensive firing power, the Coyotes are hoping to stay within striking distance by playing with a lot of defensive energy.
