Without any doubts, the Senators did a great job of compensating the loss of All-Star forward Dany Heatley last year and rallied to a surprising fifth place finish in the Eastern Conference. Yet, the franchise from Ontario ultimately failed to overcome the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first playoff round and was eliminated in six games. However, the team around Daniel Alfredsson got even tougher in the off-season as the Senators signed Sergei Gonchar from the Pittsburgh Penguins to a three-year, $16 million deal. Therefore, the Ottawa Senators are hoping to give Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals a run for their money when the game gets underway at Verizon Center on Monday at 11 p.m. GMT.

Considering that the Caps were able to pull off a spectacular regular season that ended with an impressive 54-15-13 record and the first overall seed, it was somewhat surprising that the team from D.C. ultimately failed to deliver in the playoffs and lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the Conference Quarterfinals. Especially franchise cornerstone Alex Ovechkin received a lot of criticism due to his inability to lead the squad of coach Bruce Boudreau to the Stanley Cup Finals. However, the Capitals' front-office is confident that the team has the necessary talent and will perform better under pressure in this year's NHL campaign. Thus, Washington will enter its encounter with the Senators highly motivated to secure an important home win early in the season.

Considering that the Caps lead the Eastern Conference by nearly a 20-point margin, there appears to be no doubt that the team from D.C. Will enter the post-season as favorites to win it all. Nonetheless, Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals will face one of the better teams in the league when they host the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday at midnight GMT.

Albeit the Senators have not been nearly as dominant as the Caps, the team around Daniel Alfredsson is still in the race for home-ice advantage and has played fairly well so far. More specifically, Ottawa is holding on to the fifth place in the East, posting a solid 39-30-5 record. That said, the Senators will have to continue to play up to their potential as they are just five points ahead of the eight placed Boston Bruins. Especially their performance at the offensive end of the ice left much to be desired at times and could become a factor down the stretch.
In contrast, the Capitals' front-office has very little complain about as Alex Ovechkin and company rallied to 49-14-11 record and lead the Eastern Conference, no less than 18 points ahead of the second placed New Jersey Devils. Without any doubts, Washington has been by far the most exciting offensive team up to this point, scoring 289 goals in 74 games. Needless to say that Ovechkin will crack the 100-point mark once again in 2009-10, so far he recorded 45 goals and 53 assists for a total of 98 points in 64 games. Likewise, Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin have been an essential part of the Caps' offense, contributing 89 and 73 points respectively. Therefore, the Capitals will enter their encounter with the Senators as everyone's favorites to clinch a win on Wednesday night. Ultimately, Washington's offensive fire power will most likely be too much to handle for Ottawa.
