Having lost three of their last four games, the Senators have not been playing as well as early in the season and will have to improve their defensive efforts down the stretch. Thus, the Ottawa Senators will make their way to Pennsylvania to face Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday at 6 p.m. GMT.

Albeit the Penguins have not been steamrolling their opponents like they used to in recent years, the team around Sidney Crosby is still right in the race for home-ice advantage, hanging on to a solid 12-8-2 record. In fact, Pittsburgh trails the first ranked Philadelphia Flyers by just 4 points and has plenty of time to make a run before the playoffs get underway in March. Offensively, Sidney Crosby’s performance has been off the charts as the All-Star forward recorded 15 goals and 20 assists for a total of 35 points in just 22 appearances. That said, the Penguins might have to improve their power-play performance as they have scored just 15% of the time in 5-on-4 situations up to this point. Nonetheless, Pittsburgh should be able to overcome the Senators if they show another strong defensive effort on Friday night.

With just one win in four games, things have evidently not been going well for the Senators as they experienced significant problems on the offensive end of the ice, scoring just 6 goals in 4 games. Thus, the Ottawa Senators will try to get back on track when they face Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday at 11 p.m. GMT.

Much like the Senators, the Penguins also came slow out of the gates and posted a disappointing 1-3-0 record in the first week of regular season action. Considering that the team around Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby made it to the Stanley Cup Finals twice in the past three years, it is certainly surprising that the squad of coach Dan Bylsma has been struggling so far. Most importantly, Pittsburgh's offensive lines will have to find their rhythm sooner rather than later as the Penguins have been averaging just 2.0 goals per contest so far. Nonetheless, Sidney Crosby and company will be everyone's favorites to come away with a win when the game gets underway on Monday night.

Even though the Senators did not perform as well as they were hoping before the season got underway, the team around Daniel Alfredsson is still right in the playoff mix after eleven weeks of play. Unfortunately, Ottawa is about to enter a tough challenge on the road when they make their way to Pittsburgh to take on Sidney Crosby and the Penguins at Mellon Arena on Thursday at midnight GMT.

Holding on to a 17-12-4 record, the Senators certainly underperformed in this year’s NHL campaign so far. Although the franchise had to trade disgruntled All-Star Dany Heatley over the summer, they did get back two explosive forwards in Jonathan Cheechoo and Milan Michalek. However, Ottawa’s off-season acquisitions did not pay any measurable dividends yet. More precisely, Cheechoo only recorded 3 goals and 7 points so far and did not come anywhere near the expectations of the Senator’s front-office. Likewise, former All-Star Alexei Kovalev did not provide the consistent offensive spark the team needed and scored no more than 7 goals and 18 points in 30 appearances.

In contrast, the Penguins played up to their potential and underlined that their Stanley Cup title in 2008-09 was no fluke. Leading the Eastern Conference with a 24-10-1 record, Pittsburgh appears to be highly motivated to head into the post-season with the top seed in the East and possibly repeat last year’s success. Especially the explosive offense around Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby turned out to be a tough match-up for most teams as the Penguins went on to average 3.3 goals per contest. Leading Pittsburgh offensively, Crosby and Malkin combined for 32 goals and 76 points in 34 and 28 games respectively. Considering said circumstances, there is no doubt that the Penguins will enter their encounter with the Senators as undisputed favorites to clinch a win at Mellon Arena on Thursday. Ultimately, coach Dan Bylsma’s squad is the better team at both ends of the ice and can count on their experienced stars to make clutch plays down the stretch.
