Monday 14th March 22:00 - 01:00 GMT
Considering that the Senators lost franchise cornerstone Dany Heatley last summer, their playoff appearance in 2009-10 can certainly be considered a success. Hoping to make another step forward, Sergei Gonchar and the Ottawa Senators will take on the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday at 11:30 p.m. GMT.

Much like the Senators, the Sabres did fairly well last year as they managed to finish third in the Eastern Conference despite lacking an All-Star to lead the team. However, the team around Jochen Hecht and Derek Roy pulled off a solid team effort to post a 45-27-10 record before falling to the Boston Bruins in the first playoff round. Where as the Sabres are coming off a fairly quiet off-season, the Senators opted to become active on the free agent market and were able to acquire veteran defender Sergei Gonchar from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Thus, both teams might find themselves on a fairly level playing field when the game between the Sabres and Senators gets underway on Tuesday night.

Considering that the Senators were hoping to establish themselves in the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference right away, the franchise from Ontario is hardly satisfied with a 1-4-1 record to start the season. Thus, Daniel Alfredsson and the Ottawa Senators will visit the Buffalo Sabres on Friday at 11 p.m. GMT.

Given the fact that the Sabres posted an impressive 45-27-10 record last year and finished third in the Eastern Conference, the team around Derek Roy certainly expected a better start into this year's NHL campaign. After all, Buffalo was one of the best defensive teams in 2009-10 and made life difficult for their opponents' offense night in and night out. Yet, the Sabres lost five out of six games so far and all the sudden find themselves at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Most importantly, Derek Roy and company will have to play with more energy at the defensive end of the ice as they allowed no less than 3.0 goals per contest in the first two weeks of regular season play. Therefore, hockey fans around the globe can expect the Sabres to play with a lot of energy when they meet the Senators on Friday night.
