Even though the Rangers got off to a terrific start early in the season, things did not pan out as the franchise’s front-office was hoping for. Trying to get back on track and secure a playoff spot, the New York Rangers will take on Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals at Verizon Center on Sunday at midnight GMT.

Unlike the Rangers, the Caps have very little to complain about as they lead the Eastern Conference with an outstanding 41-13-8 record, no less than 13 points ahead of the second placed New Jersey Devils. Without any doubts, Washington’s key to success has been their dynamic offense that steamrolled whatever came in the Capitals’ way so far. More specifically, the Caps are the highest scoring team in the entire league, recording 247 goals in just 62 games. Once again among the best forwards in the NHL, All-Star Alex Ovechkin led the franchise from D.C. with 42 goals and 89 points in just 54 games.

In contrast, the Rangers experienced significantly more problems at the offensive end of the ice as they average just 2.5 goals per contest. Although the recently acquired Marian Gaborik contributed 35 goals and 69 points in 58 appearances, the overall productivity of New York’s offensive lines still leaves much to be desired. That said, the Rangers trail the eight ranked Montreal Canadiens by just one point and still have plenty of time to get their act together and clinch a playoff berth. Nonetheless, the Caps will inevitably have an edge over coach John Tortorella’s squad on Sunday night. Ultimately, the Capitals’ offense will most likely be just too much to handle for the Rangers down the stretch.
