Coming off a 4-2 win versus the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Rangers are hoping to clinch their seventh straight victory versus San Jose. The Sharks on the other hand fell to the Phoenix Coyotes earlier this week and have yet to establish themselves in the upper echelon of the Western Conference. Thus, Dany Heatley and company will head to New York to face the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Monday at 11 p.m. GMT.

So far, no team has been able to perform as consistently as the Rangers on both ends of the ice. Posting an impressive 6-1-0 record, coach John Tortorella’s squad has only allowed 2.0 goals per contest but scored a league-high 28 goals in seven games. Pushed forward by solid defense and the outstanding goaltending of Henrik Lundqvist, the Rangers have proven to be one of the toughest teams to overcome. Offensively, Vaclav Prospal and Marian Gaborik led New York, combining for no less than twenty points.

In contrast, the San Jose Sharks are not fully satisfied with their performance in the first two weeks of this year’s NHL campaign. More specifically, the Sharks showed some sparks offensively with the addition of All-Star Dany Heatley, but have been unable to bring the same effort night in and night out. Nonetheless, the franchise from California arguably features some of the best offensive lines in the league as Dany Heatley, Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton combined for 11 goals and 15 assists for a total of 26 points already. Yet, the Sharks will have to bring their A-game in order to stand a chance versus the Rangers at Madison Square on Tuesday night. Ultimately, New York has an undisputable edge over San Jose defensively and has shown that its overhauled offense is as capable as anyone when it comes to finding the net. Either way, fans around the league can expect an excellent game of hockey between two teams hoping to make a post-season run in 2009-10.
