Friday 18th February 00:00 - 03:00 GMT
With three wins in four games, the New York Rangers underlined that they are going to be in the playoff mix once again this year. Likewise, the Los Angeles Kings also got off a good start with back-to-back wins versus the San Jose Sharks and Minnesota Wild. Thus, the Rangers will host the Kings at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday at 11 p.m. GMT.

While the Rangers were one of the best defensive teams in the league in 2008-09, they often lacked offensive firing power which ultimately prevented them from making it deep into the post-season. Thus, the off-season acquisition of Marian Gaborik was obviously meant to address said issue, yet the tremendous impact of the move was somewhat unforeseen. So far, the Slovak forward scored four goals and dished out two assists for a total of six points in just four games. As a team, the Rangers averaged 3.5 goals per contest and could be a darkhorse come playoff time.
Similarly, the Los Angeles Kings showed exciting hockey on the offensive end of the ice in the first week of play. More specifically, the Kings scored a total of 12 goals in their two victories versus San Jose and Minnesota. Given the fact that Los Angeles was one of the worst teams offensively in 2008-09 it remains to be seen whether they will be able to keep up their offensive output. Especially Ryan Smyth and Anze Kopitar played extremely well with 6 and 8 points respectively. Nonetheless, the franchise from California will most likely face more resistance versus the Rangers’ defense than in their previous games. Considering the aforesaid performance of both teams so far, Wednesday’s encounter at Madison Square Garden could still be anyone’s game.
