Having won only 11 out of 25 games so far, the Panthers are not thrilled with their play early in the season as it looks like they might miss the post-season once again. Thus, the Florida Panthers will try to get an important road win when they visit Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on Friday at midnight GMT.

Albeit the Caps have been playing great hockey in the first two months of this year’s NHL campaign, the team around Alex Ovechkin slowed down a bit last week as they dropped three straight versus the Dallas Stars, Atlanta Trashers and Toronto Maple Leafs. That being said, they still lead the Southeast Division comfortably, holding on to an 18-8-3 record. Offensively, Alexander Semin and Alex Ovechkin have been spectacular as they combined for 29 goals and 66 points up to this point. Considering the Capitals’ offensive strength and the Panthers recent struggles, Washington will be everyone’s favorite heading to their encounter with Florida on Friday night.

After four straight losses, the Florida Panthers are under considerable pressure to bounce back in order to stay in the playoff race. Unfortunately, the Panthers are about to face a tough challenge when take on the Washington Capitals at Verizon Center on Friday at midnight GMT.

Even though the Panthers had a lot of hope for a more successful campaign in 2009-10, things have not been going Florida’s way thus far. More precisely, Peter DeBoer’s squad is just ahead of the struggling Leafs and Hurricanes at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a mediocre 10-11-4 record. Allowing 3.2 goals per game, the Panthers were unable to find their rhythm defensively which cost them several games already. Offensively, Nathan Horton led all scores as he recorded 7 goals and 14 assists for a total of 21 points.

In contrast, the Washington Capitals got off to a great start and quietly climbed all the way to the top of the Eastern Conference, posting an impressive 15-5-6 record. Most importantly, the Caps showcased exciting up-tempo ice hockey and are currently the second best offensive team in the league, just one goal behind the San Jose Sharks. Especially All-Star left wing Alexander Ovechkin has been phenomenal as he scored 18 goals and 29 points in just 20 appearances. Taking everything into account, there is no doubt that the Capitals are everyone’s favorites to come away with a win versus the struggling Panthers on Friday night. Given the fact that Florida’s defense has been mediocre at best, it is rather unlikely that the Panthers will be able to contain Washington’s dynamic offensive lines. Ultimately, the Caps have much more talent on board and are a significantly deeper team than the franchise from Southern Florida.
