Coming off a disappointing 2008-09 season at the bottom of the Western Conference, the Colorado Avalanche got off to a great start in this year’s NHL campaign. Thus, Paul Stastny and the Avs will host the Edmonton Oilers on Monday at 1 a.m. GMT.

Even though many questioned whether Colorado would be able to make it back to the playoff race in 2009-10, Joe Sacco’s squad looked much better in the first month of play and posted an impressive 11-3-2 record so far. Especially their performance at the defensive end of the ice was somewhat surprising as they rank among the best teams in the league with just 2.18 goals allowed per contest. Likewise, the Avalanche had no problems finding the net and were carried by Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk who combined for no less than 30 points in 16 games.
In contrast, the Edmonton Oilers experienced some ups and downs and are hoping to get back to the playoff mix as they season goes on. Especially their defensive lines have been struggling and allowed a whopping 50 goals in just 16 games. That said, they performed reasonably well offensively, led by Dustin Penner and Ales Hemsky who put up 19 and 16 points respectively.
Taking everything into consideration, the Avs appear to be everyone’s favorite to come away with a win in their encounter with the Oilers. Most importantly, Colorado has been unstoppable at home as they remain undefeated at Pepsi Center. The Oilers on the other hand are the worst road team in the league, dropping 6 out of 7 so far. One key aspect for Edmonton will be to tighten up their defense in order to avoid another loss when the game between the Avalanche and Oilers gets underway on Monday night.
