Coming off two straight Stanley Cup Finals appearances, the Detroit Red Wings are undeniably one of the favorites to win it all this season. Participating in the NHL Europe campaign, the Red Wings begin their journey in Stockholm where they will meet the St Louis Blues on Friday at 8 p.m. GMT.
Considering the success of Detroit’s veteran squad in recent years, it is no surprise that the franchise focused on resigning their restricted free agents during the off-season. After losing a seven-game Stanley Cup Finals showdown versus the Pittsburgh Penguins in June, the team of head coach Mike Babcock can be expected to be one of the toughest sides to beat in 2009-10. Unlike other contenders, the Red Wings’ success largely rests on their excellent defense and unselfish game plan execution. Once again, the team will be led by eleven-time All-Star Nicklas Lidstrom who can rightfully be considered as one of the highest scoring defensemen of all times at 997 career points in 1330 regular season games.
The St Louis Blues on the other hand, will most likely be content if they manage to make it to the playoffs for the second straight time after several years of post-season abstinence. Fortunately, 37-year old veteran Keith Tkachuk decided to play another season for the Blues who will urgently need his leadership on and off the ice.
Although anything else than a win by the Red Wings would be a surprise, the St Louis Blues are not exactly an easy opponent either. Ultimately, the big question mark behind the franchise from Missouri will be whether they can keep up with Detroit over the full length of the game. Last year, the Wings showed countless times that a few poorly organized minutes can be enough to fall to the team of Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom. Either way, the audience will most likely get to see a highly entertaining game in the second part of this year’s NHL Europe double-header.
