Albeit the Sharks did not get off to a particularly good start in the 2009-10 playoffs, they were able to make it to the Western Conference Semifinals. Thus, Dany Heatley and the San Jose Sharks will host the Detroit Red Wings at HP Pavilion on Monday at midnight GMT.

Even though the Wings did not live up to their contender role in the regular season, they still managed to clinch a playoff berth in the competitive Western Conference. Likewise, Nicklas Lidstrom and company were able to overcome the Phoenix Coyotes in a tough seven game series in the first round. Most importantly, Detroit pulled its act together defensively while putting up solid numbers at the other end of the ice. Leading the franchise from Michigan is Henrik Zetterberg who recorded 6 goals and 5 assists for a total of 11 points.
In contrast, the Sharks are hoping to finally make a run to the Stanley Cup Finals after a disappointing first round exit in 2008-09. One key factor for San Jose's regular season success has certainly been their dynamic offense around All-Stars Dany Heatley, Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. Yet, in the Western Conference Quarterfinals neither of them was a measurable factor. That said, the Sharks deep bench gave the franchise from California a lift and avoided another first round disaster down the stretch. Thus, San Jose will enter their encounter with the Red Wings as favorites to come away with a win on Monday night. However, one should not underestimate the team around veteran defender Nicklas Lidstrom as they have shown in the past that they are very capable to perform at both ends of the ice and close out contested games.

Still struggling to establish themselves in the playoff mix three months into the season, the Wings are hoping to get back on track in the second half of this year’s NHL campaign. Thus, the Detroit Red Wings will travel to San Jose to face Dany Heatley and the San Jose Sharks at HP Pavilion on Sunday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

Considering that the Red Wings are coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals appearances in 2008 and 2009, their struggles in 2009-10 are certainly surprising. After all, the team from Michigan has arguably been the most successful NHL franchise over the last decade and showcased excellent hockey night and night out in recent years. Yet, Detroit is trailing the eight ranked Nashville Predators by no less than five points, posting an uninspired 21-15-6 record. One issue thus far has been the lack of offensive firing power as the Wings are at the bottom of the league offensively, scoring just 2.5 goals per contest.
In contrast, the Sharks underlined their championship ambitions as they lead the Pacific division with an impressive 27-9-7 record. Unlike the Red Wings, Joe Thornton and company had no trouble finding the net and electrified fans around the league with their offensive minded hockey. Making up for the occasional defensive breakdown, Thornton led the Sharks recording 11 goals and 47 assists for a total of 58 points. Likewise, Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley appear to be well on their way to the 100-point mark at 44 and 46 points respectively. Therefore, it looks like San Jose is bound to have an edge over the Wings on Sunday night. Yet, the Sharks should not underestimate the veteran team from Michigan that could be able to give them a run for their money. After all, Detroit underperformed thus far and is among the better defensive teams in the league which could make things more difficult than usual for San Jose’s explosive offense.
