Coming off a crucial 4-2 home win, the Pittsburgh Penguins were able to stay in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals series versus the Detroit Red Wings. On Friday at 1 a.m. GMT, the Penguins will try to even the series when Detroit will be in Pittsburgh for their second road game.

There was much speculation about the Penguins’ inability to score aside from Crosby and Malkin after the first two games of the series. However, in game three the whole team came out of the locker room with a sense of urgency trying to play their very best hockey to avoid going down 0-3 in the Stanley Cup Finals. Being tied 2-2 after the first two periods, the game got very physical in the third as both teams were playing with a lot of energy to secure a win. With ten minutes remaining in regulation Sergei Gonchar managed to convert a slapshot in powerplay to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead heading into the last minutes of the game. Gonchar showed an extraordinary performance, especially on the defensive end where he repeatedly shutdown Detroit’s offense despite playing with a banged up right knee. Maxime Talbot scored his second goal of the night when the clock was winding down late in the third and the Red Wings’ had already replaced their goalie with an additional attacker. Likewise, Evgeni Malkin finished the game with three assists to take the league’s lead in post-season scoring.

Looking forward to game four the Penguins are feeling fairly comfortable to even the series on Friday night at home. After all they were able to win game three without any goals from their two superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Nonetheless, the pressure still is on Pittsburgh as a third win for the Red Wings would mean that the Penguins had to win three consecutive games.

After two consecutive home wins, the Detroit Red Wings are enjoying a comfortable 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Penguins on the other hand are now facing a must-win scenario in game three on Wednesday at 1 a.m. GMT.

While the Red Wings got a confidence boost after two straight wins to enter the series, the Penguins are facing a similar situation as last year. Also losing the first games in the Stanley Cup Finals it turned out to be to late to come back once they were able to play up to their potential. However, Pittsburgh is still hoping to stay in the series with a much needed win in front of their home crowd on Wednesday night.

Although Detroit’s defenders have done a remarkable job of containing Pittsburgh’s superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin so far, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to continue their efficient defense throughout the series. In the first two games it seemed like the Red Wings roster depth and controlled puck-possession system made it very difficult for Pittsburgh Penguins to put pressure on Chris Osgood’s goal. In contrast, Detroit had several role players stepping up to make crucial plays, most importantly Valtteri Flippula and Justin Abdelkader with their goals in game two. Whether Pittsburg will be able to turn around the series depends on various factors, but most importantly the Penguins will have to increase the pressure on the Red Wings goal. Likewise, finding scoring options apart from Crosby and Malkin would make things much easier and their offense less one dimensional.
