Even though it looked like the Sabres might once again be able to compete for home-ice advantage early in the season, the team around Thomas Vanek slowed down significantly and all the sudden finds itself on the ninth place in the Eastern Conference. One key problem has been Buffalo’s inability to perform at the defensive end of the floor as they gave up a whopping 2.9 goals per contest so far. Thus, the Buffalo Sabres will try to get an important win when they take on Nicklas Lidstrom and the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday at midnight GMT.

Unlike the Sabres, the Red Wings are very content with the way things have been going so far. Having posted a 37-18-6 record and leading the Central Division, Detroit’s veteran team is confident to compete for another Stanley Cup title in the 2010-11 playoffs. Given Buffalo’s struggles and the Wings’ solid performance, Pavel Datysuk and company should have an edge over the Sabres on Sunday.

Even though the Detroit Red Wings were one of the most consistent teams throughout the last decade, the veteran team around Nicklas Lidstrom did not get off to a good start this season. In fact, it took them back-to-back losses versus the St Louis Blues to pull their act together in their win versus the Chicago Blackhawks a few days ago. On Tuesday at 11 p.m. GMT, the Wings will try to secure their second victory in 2009-10 in their road game versus the Buffalo Sabres.

While the Wings’ have struggled thus far, the Sabres also experienced their fair share of problems. Most importantly, Buffalo’s offense seemed out of sync in their 2-1 loss versus the Canadiens and continued to struggle in their encounter with the Coyotes. Nonetheless, it should be mentioned that coach Craig Rivet’s squad fired a total of 39 shots on Phoenix’s goal but only scored twice in their narrow 2-1 win. On the other hand, the Sabres have been defending well allowing only 20 shots per contest.

Although the Red Wings have not played particularly well thus far, they will be entering this match-up as favorites to clinch an important road win. Much like Buffalo, Detroit plays excellent team defense on most nights but features more offensive talent than the Sabres. In fact, the Wings’ offensive output is evenly spread among their offensive lines as only Henrik Zetterberg separated himself from the pack with three assists in the first week of action.
