While it is somewhat surprising that the Wings’ success primarily stems from their high-octane offense this year, it does not change the fact that Detroit is once again among the league’s elite teams. In a head-to-head race with the Vancouver Canucks for the number one overall seed, Nicklas Lidstrom and company are hoping to win it all down the stretch. Thus, the Detroit Red Wings will head to California to take on Saku Koivu and the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday at 3 a.m. GMT.

Even though the Ducks do neither lack individual talent nor veteran leadership, the team around Teemu Selanne is once again struggling to secure a playoff berth. Holding on to the eleventh place in the Western Conference and a 33-25-5 record, Anaheim will have to elevate its level of play to avoid missing the post-season down the line. One positive aspect has been the strong play of Corey Perry who scored 31 goals and added 37 assists for a total of 68 points in 61 games. However, the Ducks will most likely have a tough time trying to keep up with the Red Wings on Thursday night.
