Hoping for their second straight playoff appearance, the Predators picked up right where they left off last year as they posted a 3-0-2 record to start the season. Thus, the Nashville Predators are confident to stay on track when they take on Brad Richards and the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center on Sunday at midnight GMT.

Having missed the post-season in 2009-10, the Stars seem to be highly motivated to make it back to the playoff race in this year's NHL campaign. More specifically, Brad Richards and company pulled off an excellent start as the team from Northern Texas won four out of five to establish themselves at the top of the Western Conference. Especially their performance at the offensive end of the ice was a key factor for Dallas' success early in the season as they average no less than 4.0 goals per contest. That said, the Predators are no easy opponent either and will try to steal one on the road when they face the Stars on Sunday night.

Opening the season with two straight wins, the Nashville Predators are getting ready for another year in the playoff race. Already having met on opening night, the Dallas Stars will take on the Predators for the second time this year on Thursday at 0:30 a.m. GMT.

Given the fact that both of Dallas’ defeats were decided by only one goal, the team around Mike Modano is a bit frustrated after giving away crucial points that could become important down the stretch. However, the Texan franchise was able to bounce back versus the Calgary Flames as they rallied to an impressive 5-2 victory on the road. So far, the Stars’ offense has been led by veteran center Brad Richards who tallied one goal and three assists in the first week of play.

In contrast, Nashville had a great start beating the Stars in their first encounter before clinching another win versus the Colorado Avalanche at home. Only allowing two goals per contest, the team has shown a positive upswing in terms of defensive intensity. On the other end of the ice, the Predators thrived under the leadership of Joe Arnott who made some big plays and recorded two goals and two assists in the first two games.

Considering how the first meeting between Dallas and Nashville went down, the audience can expect a close game between to fairly even teams. Although the Stars have had their ups and downs they seemed more comfortable than last year and will most likely give the Predators a run for their money at American Airlines Center on Thursday.

Over the past few months, the Dallas Stars experienced significant changes in their front office and coaching staff in order to utilize their existing talent more efficiently. Thus, the franchise around Mike Modano and Brenden Morrow is hoping to get back into the playoff race in 2009-10. On Sunday at 1 a.m. GMT, the Stars will host the Nashville Predators in their home opener at American Airlines Center.

Unlike many teams which were unable to make it to the post-season, GM David Polle did not see the immediate need to blow-up his team. Even though the Predators narrowly missed playoffs last year, they still showed promising signs and finished the season with a fairly decent 40-34-8 record. During the off-season, Nashville did not go after any expensive free agents, but limited themselves to a few minor transactions. Most notably, they were able to acquire hard-nosed defender Marcel Goc from the San Jose Sharks for a bargain at $550000 a year. Likewise, the Predators swapped a few draft picks and resigned some of their restricted free agents, including Joel Ward and Steve Sullivan.

In contrast, Dallas immediately took action after they failed to make it to the post-season and posted an unsatisfying 36-35-11 record. Thus, General Manager Brett Hull was replaced by Joe Nieuwendyk and subsequently named Marc Crawford as new head coach after firing Dave Tippett. Acquiring Karlis Skrastins, Warren Peters and Jeff Woywitka the Stars were able to sign a few valuable role players which might help them to get over the hump. Similarly, expectations are high for their eight overall draft pick Scott Glennie who will most likely be mentored by veteran forward Mike Modano.

Although the Dallas Stars’ have set their goals high for the 2009-10 season it remains to be seen whether they will turn out to be realistic. Most importantly, the franchise did very little to improve their team in the short run except for signing a new head coach. Nashville on the other hand seemed like a team which could have easily made it to the playoffs last year, but ultimately failed to deliver in the deciding weeks at the end of the season. Given the fact that the match-up between Nashville and Dallas appears to be fairly even, the Stars’ home ice advantage could possibly becoming a deciding factor.
