While the Avalanche's playoff appearance in 2009-10 was a pleasant surprise for the franchise, the team around Paul Stastny seems to be dedicated to make further progress in this year's NHL campaign. More precisely, Colorado won four out of six games in the first two weeks of regular season action and leads the Northwest Division ahead of the Vancouver Canucks. Thus, the Colorado Avalanche will host Dany Heatley and the San Jose Sharks at Pepsi Center on Friday at 1 a.m. GMT.

Considering that the Sharks were one of the best offensive teams in the league last year, their recent performance certainly left much to be desired. More precisely, Patrick Marleau and company only scored 2.0 goals per contest so far which resulted in just one win and two losses. That said, if the Sharks finally play up to their potential, they could very well give the Avalanche a run for their money on Friday night.

Albeit the Sharks once again entered the playoffs as number one seed in the West, things have not been going particularly well in the Western Conference Quarterfinals so far. Thus, Dany Heatley and the San Jose Sharks will try to take the series lead when they face the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday at 3 a.m. GMT.

Unlike San Jose, there is very little pressure on the Avalanche to advance to the next round. After all, the franchise from the Midwest already pulled off an impressive turn-around as they finished 2008-09 at the bottom of the league before rallying to the post-season in this year's NHL campaign. Moreover, the Avalanche played extremely well so far and clinched 1-0 and 2-1 wins in game one and three respectively. In fact, Colorado is performing exceptionally well versus San Jose's dynamic offensive lines apart from a complete defensive breakdown in game two.
In contrast, the Sharks are obviously very concerned to fail reaching their goals once again as they already experienced an unsatisfying first-round playoff exit in 2008-09 despite posting the best record in the entire league. Most importantly, San Jose's praised offense around Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau failed to play up to its potential. Similarly, All-Star left wing Dany Heatley recorded just one assist in three games as well. Taking everything into account, the audience can expect a hard-nosed battle between the favorites from California and the young Avalanche team that is hoping to get a boost from its home crowd on Sunday night.
