Surprising many experts around the league, the Colorado Avalanche established themselves in the upper echelon of the Western Conference and seem to be dedicated to make it to the post-season in 2009-10. Thus, Paul Stastny and company will head to Alberta where they will face their Northwest Division rivals from Edmonton at Rexall Place on Thursday at 2 a.m. GMT.

Even though the Avalanche failed to make it to the playoffs last year and did not undergo any major off-season changes, the team around captain Paul Stastny seemed to click much better in the first two months of play. Especially Colorado’s defensive lines did a great job of holding their opponents to just 46 goals in 19 games while goalie Craig Anderson posted an outstanding .930 save percentage so far. At the other end of the ice, Wojtek Wolski, Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk combined for 58 points as they led the Avs to a 12-4-3 record to start the season.
In contrast, very little has been going Edmonton’s way in the first nine weeks of action in 2009-10. More precisely, the franchise from Alberta is still two points away from the eight spot in the Western Conference and hit a slump over the past few weeks. In fact, the Oilers did only win two of their last ten and failed to show any consistency defensively. Allowing more than three goals per contest, Edmonton failed to outscore their opponents more often than not as they fell to the 11th place in the West. Considering said circumstances, anything else than a win for the Avalanche would be a surprise. After all, the Avs played much better at both ends of the ice where as the Oilers solely relied on their offense to win games. Nonetheless, the audience can expect Paul Stastny and the Oilers to play with a lot of energy in front of their home crowd at Rexall Place.
