Coming off a home loss versus the Vancouver Canucks, the Oilers continue to struggle as they won just one out of their last seven games. Unfortunately, the Edmonton Oilers will probably have to settle for another disappointment when Patrick Sharp and the Chicago Blackhawks are in town on Sunday at midnight GMT.

Without any doubts, the Hawks are in a tough situation after winning the Stanley Cup last season as all the sudden the young team around Patrick Kane is facing sky-high expectations. So far, Chicago struggled to live up to said expectations as they stumbled to a 7-7-1 record in the first month of regular season action. Especially the Blackhawks' defense was not nearly as energetic as in 2009-10 and allowed its opponents to score 3.0 goals per contest up to this point. That said, Chicago had no problems finding the net and was led by Patrick Sharp who scored 10 goals and 16 points in 14 appearances. Yet, despite the aforementioned weaknesses, anything else than a victory by the Blackhawks would be a surprise on Sunday night.

Much like the Hawks, the Edmonton Oilers got off to a slow start and are holding on to a mediocre 1-1-1 record after one week of play. Thus, both teams are highly motivated for their encounter at United Center on Thursday at 0:30 a.m. GMT.

After reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2008-09, the Chicago Blackhawks undisputed goal is to make another post-season run this year. However, the team around Patrick Kane split their season opening back-to-back with the Panthers before falling to the Detroit Red Wings. That said, a loss versus the Wings is nothing to be ashamed of but now the Hawks will have to pull themselves together to make it back to the upper half of the Western Conference. One positive aspect thus far has been the fairly efficient defense as the team of coach Joel Quenneville only allowed two goals per contest.
Similarly, the Edmonton Oilers did not perform particularly bad but have little to show for their efforts except a lone win versus the Dallas Stars. More specifically, the Oilers underwent two fairly frustrating losses versus the Calgary Flames as they gave away a win twice in the last minute of play. So far, defenseman Denis Grebeshkov has been the most efficient scorer for Edmonton with one goal and four assists for a total of five points.
Taking said circumstances into account, everything points to a hard-nosed battle between two competitive teams hoping to bounce back from a disappointing start into the season. Ultimately, the game could be fairly even as the Oilers might have a slight advantage on the offensive end of the ice, while the Blackhawks might have a better rhythm defensively.
