After consecutive appearances in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009, the Detroit Red Wings are undoubtedly a legitimate contender in this year’s NHL campaign. However, the team around veteran Nicklas Lidstrom dropped their first two games versus the St Louis Blues 3-4 and 3-5 respectively. Thus, the Red Wings are highly motivated to clinch their first victory in 2009-10 when they host the Blackhawks on Thursday at 11 p.m. GMT.

Similarly, the Blackhawks are not particularly thrilled with their start into the season either. After a turbulent off-season that featured extensive discussions about the clerical error that cost the franchise millions in salaries, the team can finally focus on playing hockey again. Even though coach Joel Quenneville’s team was able to beat the Florida Panthers 4-0 in their season opener, they subsequently lost their second game of the NHL Europe event in overtime.

Given the fact that neither team made any major off-season moves, the audience can expect a hard-nosed battle between two of the better teams in the Western Conference. While one might argue that the Red Wings are not in shape after two straight losses to begin the season, they might just be overdue for a demonstration of their frequently praised, team oriented hockey. However, Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks will do their best to prevent Detroit from dictating the tempo of the game in order to secure their second regular season win.

Heading into game four, the Chicago Blackhawks were very confident to even the series at home. After all, Detroit was missing two key players with Pavel Daytsuk and Nicklas Lidstrom both being sidelined. However, the shorthanded Red Wings showed that their roster is deep enough to compensate the missing of the aforementioned NHL stars. In fact, Detroit was already up 2-0 in the first period after Johan Franzen and Marian Hossa scored the first two goals of the game. While the Blackhawks tried to find their way back into the game, the Red Wings continued their efficient power-play efforts in the second period. More specifically, Detroit scored two power-play goals in the second period which decided the game before the teams were heading into the third. Being up 5-1 at that point, there was little resistance coming Detroit’s way as they cruised to a comfortable 6-1 road win after Henrik Zetterberg scored his second goal of the game. Valtteri Flippula was named player of the game due to his excellent defense as well as one goal and two assists.

Without any doubts, the Blackhawks will have a tough time staying in the series being down 1-3 versus the defending Stanley Cup champions. The Red Wings have shown that they are one of the best teams in the league at home while Chicago was struggling on the road in the first two games of the Western Conference Finals. Nonetheless, the audience can expect a very physical game five featuring the Blackhawks trying to avoid elimination while the Red Wings will try to close out the series.
