Even though hardly anyone expected the Islanders to perform particularly well this year, their 0-1-3 record so far has been fairly frustrating for the franchise from Long Island. Hoping to snap the four-game losing streak, the Isles will host the Carolina Hurricanes at Nassau Coliseum on Wednesday at 11 p.m. GMT.

With only two wins in six games, the Hurricanes struggled to keep up the level of play they showcased in their post-season run last year. Most importantly, Carolina showed significant deficits on the defensive end of the ice as they allowed more than three goals per contest so far. Coming off back-to-back losses versus the Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins, the pressure is rising to bounce back versus the New York Islanders. Offensively, things looked better but still leave much to be desired. Unfortunately for the ‘Canes, franchise centerpiece Eric Staal will most likely miss their road game in New York due to an undisclosed injury.

While Carolina has their fair share of problems, the first two weeks of play turned out to be even more disappointing for the Isles. Without any doubts, losing four straight was unsatisfying, but the way the games went down was even more frustrating. More specifically, the Islanders made it to overtime in three of their four defeats, but were unable to close out any of the games. That said, one has to consider that the Islanders are a very young team and lack veteran leadership at times. That said, a very promising sign was the performance of rookie John Tavares. Selected as first overall pick in this year’s NHL entry draft, Tavares tallied two goals and added three assists for a total of five points in his four games. Although the ‘Canes might seem like the favorites to secure a victory in Long Island, the game could be more even than expected. The 0-1-3 record of the Islanders does not adequately represent their performance thus far while the struggling Hurricanes might be limited offensively without captain Eric Staal.
