Coming off three losses in five games, the Carolina Hurricanes are still struggling to play up to their potential thus far. Given the fact that the team around Jussi Jokinen clearly sees themselves among the championship contenders this year, the ‘Canes will have to pull their act together after a sub par start into the 2009-10 season. Thus, the Hurricanes will make their way to New Jersey where they will face the Devils on Saturday at 11 p.m. GMT.

With out any doubts, the Carolina Hurricanes experienced their fair share of problems in the first two weeks of action. Posting a mediocre 3-2-0 record, coach Paul Maurice’s squad already allowed 17 goals in five contests. Moreover, one aspect of the game that significantly hurt the ‘Canes was their whopping 25 penalty minutes per game. Likewise, Carolina’s offense has not been outstanding either with a meager 2.4 goals per game. That said, forward Jussi Jokinen separated himself from the pack as he tallied two goals and added another three assists to lead the ‘Canes scoring sheet with five points.
New Jersey on the other hand improved drastically after starting the season with two straight losses. However, the team around former All-Star goaltender Martin Brodeur immediately bounced back and is holding on to a three-game winning streak after defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers and Washington Capitals. However, it should be pointed out that the Devils did not always perform well on the defensive end of the ice causing serious problems in combination with Brodeur’s unusually inconsistent goaltending.
Taking everything into consideration, it looks like either team could get away with a victory at Prudential Center on Saturday night. Both teams have been struggling defensively, but have shown that they can play significantly better in the past. Ultimately, the Devils and Hurricanes will most likely be competing for home ice advantage down the stretch and might be overdue to get their act together.
