Despite being the best team in the Eastern Conference during the regular season last year, the Boston Bruins were unable to make it past the Hurricanes in the conference semi-finals. Thus, the team around NHL All-Star Marc Savard is hoping to take revenge when they will host the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday at 11 p.m. GMT.

However, it does not look like things will be easier for the Bruins than in their playoff encounter with the Hurricanes in May. More specifically, Boston lost high scoring forward Phil Kessel where as Carolina managed to lock up their core for the next years as they resigned most key-players during the off-season. Nonetheless, left wing veteran Marco Sturm will be back in the lineup after missing most of the 2008-09 season due to a torn meniscus and ACL injury. The year before his injury, Sturm repeatedly proved that he can be regarded an essential part of Boston’s offense as he scored 27 goals and added 29 assists for a total of 56 points in 80 regular season appearances.
Taking everything into consideration, the match between the Hurricanes and Bruins might turn out to be one of the more exciting ones this Saturday. Both teams are extremely talented and played each other in a highly entertaining seven game playoff series last season. Without any doubts, either team could come out of TD Banknorth Garden with a victory, even though the Bruins may just be a little more motivated after being eliminated by the Hurricanes a few months ago.

With a crucial 4-2 road win the Boston Bruins were able to even the series 3-3 and avoided playoff elimination in North Carolina. Heading back to Boston, they will now host the Hurricanes for the deciding game seven at TD Banknorth Garden on Friday at 1 a.m. GMT.

Coming into the game with a lot of energy, the Bruins managed to take the lead just two minutes into the game when Marc Recchi put the puck past Cam Ward on a beautiful assist from Patrice Bergeron. However, Boston did not rest on their early lead but continued the efforts to attack the Hurricanes’ goal. Just three minutes later, Steve Montador converted an open slapshot to extend the Bruins lead to 2-0. The Hurricanes were able to cut the lead early in the second period after Matt Cullen scored his second post-season goal, but they never looked as sharp as the Bruins throughout most of the game. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes the new hope turned out to be short-lived when Marc Savard and Chuck Kobasew came right back to make it a 4-1 game. During the third period the crowd could see a much more defensively playing Bruins team who was looking to hold on to their lead until the end of regulation. Although Sergei Samsonov scored another goal for the Hurricanes they were not able to overcome the Bruins and will have to travel to Boston for the deciding game seven on Friday night.
Given the fact that Boston came back from being down 1-3 in the series they are certainly looking forward to game seven with a lot of confidence. Likewise, the fan crowd in their own building will try to give the Bruins’ team an edge over the Hurricanes. Moreover, Hurricanes’ coach Paul Maurice must be very concerned with the way his team lost a number of 1-on-1 situations in game six which ultimately led to their loss on Wednesday. Without any doubts, Carolina will have to bring more energy and dedication to Boston if they want to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.
