After two losses in a row versus the Edmonton Oilers and Phoenix Coyotes, the Blackhawks are under considerable pressure to pull their act together as the defending Stanley Cup champions posted an unsatisfying 8-9-1 record. Thus, the Chicago Blackhawks will try to get a win at home when Saku Koivu and the Anaheim Ducks are at United Center on Monday at midnight GMT.

Even though the Ducks got off to an awful start into the 2010-11 season, the team around Corey Perry managed to elevate its level of play as they pulled off an impressive seven game winning streak over the last two weeks. Thus, the Ducks are holding on to a 10-7-1 record and find themselves right in the playoff mix after one month of regular season action. Like in the past, veteran rightwing Teemu Selanne has been a key player at the offensive end of the ice, recording 7 goals and 19 points so far. Taking the current shape of both sides into account, fans around the league can look forward to a fairly even game between the Ducks and Hawks on Monday night.

Winning seven out of their last ten, Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks seem to be highly motivated to stay in the race for the top seed in the Western Conference. Thus, the Hawks will be looking for another win when Corey Perry and the Anaheim Ducks are in town on Monday at midnight GMT.

Even though the Hawks performed fairly well in 2008-09, very few thought that the team around Patrick Kane could possibly be a legitimate Stanley Cup contender in this year’s NHL campaign. Yet, Chicago got off to an excellent start and is tied for the first place in the Western Conference halfway through the season. Holding on to a 26-10-3 record, the team from Illinois played excellent hockey at both ends of the ice and could very well stay at the top of the Western Conference down the stretch. Most importantly, the Blackhawks’ defense took pressure of Patrick Sharp and company as coach Joel Quenneville’s squad did not have to score a lot of goals to win games. In fact, Chicago is the best defensive team in the league and limited their opponents to just 2.1 goals per contest. That said, the Hawks had no trouble finding the net either and are among the better offensive teams with 121 goals in 39 games.

In contrast, the Ducks failed to live up to the expectations of their fanbase and are struggling to stay in the playoff race. More precisely, Anaheim posted a     16-16-7 record in the first three months of play and is already trailing the 8th ranked Canucks by eight points. Even though there is still plenty of time to catch up, the Ducks will have to improve significantly at the defensive end of the ice. Where as Ryan Getzlaf and company put up solid numbers offensively, Anaheim’s mediocre defense frequently prevented the team from closing out games. Taking said issues into account, it appears to be questionable whether the Ducks will be able to give the Blackhawks a run for their money. Ultimately, Chicago is the much better team on either end of the ice and will most likely be too much to handle for the struggling franchise from California.
