Keith Tkachuk signs extension with St Louis

Keith TkachukWithout any doubts, Keith Tkachuk has proven to be an extraordinary hockey player over the past two decades. Despite being 37-years old he was still able to perform consistently night in and night out in the 2008-09 season. In fact, Tkachuk scored 25 goals and added 24 assists for a total of 49 points last year. Thus, it is no surprise that the St Louis Blues decided to offer him another one year contract which he gladly accepted. No details about the deal were made public due to franchise policy.

Considering that the Blues had a fairly successful regular season and a respectable 6th place finish in the Western Conference, re-signing Tkachuk appears to be an obvious conclusion. More specifically, he is not only valuable on the ice but his veteran leadership is a much needed locker room presence for the franchise. Likewise, he is known for playing with a lot of energy which helps the Blues to set the tone for their defense early in the game. In this sense it is no shock that he already managed to record more than 2000 penalty minutes in his career. The upcoming 2009-10 season will be his 18th year in the NHL and most likely his last appearance in professional hockey. Throughout his career Keith Tkachuk played for the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, Atlanta Trashers and St. Louis Blues while playing a total of 1134 games in which he scored 525 goals and 508 assists for 1033 points. Thus, the Blues are looking forward to further improving their competitive hockey team in the upcoming NHL Entry draft in order to have a more successful post-season next year.
