Devils sign Brendan Shanahan for another year

Brendan ShanahanDespite a rather successful regular season last year, the New Jersey Devils failed to deliver in the post-season. More specifically, the Devils secured home ice advantage with a third place finish in the Eastern Conference and a 51-27-4 record. However, they did not make it past the first playoff round as they were eliminated by the Carolina Hurricanes in an intense seven game series.

Obviously, two first round playoff exits in a row have raised various questions regarding the future of the franchise. Even though the Devils seem to perform during the regular season, they have not been able to make a decent playoff run since their last Stanley Cup title in 2002-03.

Thus, GM Lou Lamoriello decided to bring back the 40-year old veteran Brendan Shanahan for another year in order to address the urgent need of leadership in crucial games. During his 22 years in the league Shanahan played for the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues and New Jersey Devils. The right wing forward from Ontario scored 656 goals and 698 assists for a total of 1354 points in 1524 NHL games. In fact, Shanahan leads all active NHL players in goals scored and has proven to be a tough competitor night in and night out. Moreover, he was able to win three Stanley Cup championships, the IIHF World Cup and an Olympic gold medal. Likewise, Brendan Shanahan appeared in eight NHL All-Star Games and won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for his outstanding leadership qualities in 2003.

There is very little not to like about the re-signing of Brendan Shanahan, but New Jersey’s management should be aware that his career is nearing its end. With that being said, he will still be a great locker room presence and leader on the ice. Having played with hockey legends such as Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull and Jaromir Jagr, he certainly brings the experience to help younger Devils’ players to improve their game. Furthermore, his ability to perform under pressure could turn out to be a decisive factor in next year’s playoffs.
