After a disappointing 2008-09 season that culminated in the Stars missing the playoffs and finishing with a 36-35-11 record it is time for change in Dallas. More specifically, the franchise decided to name Joe Nieuwendyk as new General Manager for the upcoming season. Previous GMs Brett Hull and Les Jackson were removed from office and will now take on other positions in the Stars’ management.
Without any doubts, Joe Nieuwendyk had a spectacular NHL career that lasted twenty years and ended with a total of three Stanley Cup wins. During his NHL career he played for the Calgary Flames, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers. His impressive career totals include 564 goals and 562 assists in 1257 games. It is no surprise that Nieuwendyk received a warm welcome in Dallas since he led the Dallas Stars to their only Stanley Cup championship in 1999.
Having spent this season as GM assistant in Toronto, Joe Nieuwendyk will now take on his first General Manager job in his career. Over the past years he served as consultant for the Florida Panthers as well as acting as assistant to the general manager of the Canadian hockey team that competed in the 2009 IIHF World Championship. Considering the performance of the Stars’ last season there will most likely be a lot of work coming Nieuwendyk’s way. The first task will be the NHL entry draft at the end of June where the Dallas Stars hold the ninth overall pick. Despite missing the playoffs last year, the franchise still feels comfortable that with some young talent the Stars will be able to reach the playoffs in the 2009-10 campaign.
