Crawford to become Stars head coach

Joe NieuwendykComing off an unsatisfactory season the Dallas Stars are looking forward to more success next year with some changes. After Joe Nieuwendyk took over as General Manager last week, it was now the head coaching position to be sorted out.

More specifically, head coach Dave Tippset was fired and the Texan franchise announced today that Marc Crawford is going to be the Stars’ new coach. Without any doubts, the Canadian from Ontario is expected to bring a lot of experience to Dallas. In fact, Crawford has coached nearly thousand NHL games and holds an impressive 470-361-156 record. Over the past fifteen years he has been coaching Quebec, Vancouver, Colorado and the L.A. Kings. The biggest success in his coaching career was the NHL Stanley Cup championship with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996.

After spending the last year working as TV analyst Crawford is highly motivated to get back behind the bench, yet his success will depend on various factors. Even though Tippset may not have been the perfect fit for the Stars he hardly is the only one responsible for the disappointing last year. It is fairly normal that the coach is the first one to go when a franchise misses the playoffs for the first time in eight years, but it remains to be seen to what extent Crawford can improve Dallas next season. His first task will be to bring back the toughness the Stars’ seemed to lack at times and re-evaluate players’ abilities and resulting game plan options. Likewise, he is expected to work closely together with the Stars’ management to get as much as possible out of the NHL entry draft this month in order to bring some young talent to Dallas.
