The Swedish Elite Club constituted in the year 1975 is one amongst the top Ice Hockey Leagues of Europe. Twelve professional teams compete for the Le Mat Trophy annually. About 70% of the players from the competing clubs are local with the rest belonging to other Ice Hockey playing nations. The regular games are played in the 60 minutes format with intervals after every 20 minutes. The over-time for these games is five minutes where four players from each team take on each other and the first team to score a goal is declared winner. In a play-off, the overtime is unlimited with 20 minute intervals of sudden death game come into play where in the first team to score a goal wins. Five players from opposing teams take on each other in these games. The game can go on until either of the team scores. The maximum period of overtime so far has been 120 minutes!

Färjestad is the most accomplished team amongst the 12 teams with 7 titles to its credit followed closely by Djurgårdens with 6 titles in its kitty. However HV71 are the reigning champions.
